Portland Oregon Jury awards $82,000 after Woman is arrested when asking Police for a Business Card

A Multnomah County Oregon jury awarded a 33-year-old woman $82,000 Thursday, saying they wanted to send Portland police a message: Hand over a business card the next time a citizen asks for one.

Several jurors who spoke to The Oregonian after the verdict in Multnomah County Circuit Court said police weren’t dealing with an urgent or dangerous situation on the evening of Feb. 13, 2009 — when Shei’Meka Newmann questioned what she thought was an unnecessarily rough arrest of a fellow MAX rider. It would have taken only a few seconds for an officer to hand Newmann a card, jurors said.

A former El Paso County Texas elected official and an El Paso attorney were convicted on April 20, 2011 of conspiracy as part of a years-old public corruption investigation.

After a 12-day trial, a federal jury returned guilty verdicts against former El Paso County District Clerk Gilbert Sanchez and lawyer Luther Jones, who is a former county judge, county attorney and state representative.

Lee Bentley Farkas, the former chairman of a private mortgage lending company, Taylor, Bean & Whitaker (TBW), was convicted today for his role in a more than $2.9 billion fraud scheme that contributed to the failures of Colonial Bank, one of the 25 largest banks in the United States in 2009, and TBW, one of the largest privately held mortgage lending companies in the United States in 2009.

Missouri Sheriff Tommy Adams faces Meth Charge in State ravaged by Drug

One county on the edge of the Missouri Ozarks seemed oddly immune to the scourge of methamphetamine ravaging the state, boasting few meth raids or arrests in recent years.

Some residents now think they know why, after a meth bust landed the Carter County sheriff himself in jail.

Tommy Adams, county sheriff for a little more than two years, was arrested earlier this month after giving meth to an informant at his cabin on a remote and hilly gravel road, according to a court document. He also allegedly snorted the drug himself with a straw.

Plan presented to reform Alabama Constitution

Alabama State Senator Del Marsh’s (R-Anniston) has offered a resolution that could lead to reforming Alabama’s antiquated state Constitution.

He will propose a 16-member commission that will recommend changes to the Constitution on an article-by-article schedule that first looks at private corporations and banking, to be followed in 2012 by legislative powers and presentation.

Former Florida House Minority Leader Franklin Sands, D-Weston, wants First District Court of Appeals Judges Paul Hawkes and Brad Thomas impeached for their encouragement of the lavish new courthouse in suburban Tallahassee dubbed the “Taj Mahal.”

The courthouse has attracted strong criticism for its nearly $50 million price tag and expensive design features, such as mahogany trim and flat-screen televisions.

Macon Georgia Police Officer Truman Tucker arrested in Assault on Daughter

Macon Georgia Police arrested officer Truman Tucker of Northside Drive Saturday evening after a physical altercation with his 15-year-old daughter.

Tucker is a military veteran of the United States Navy and have been employed with the Macon Police Department for four and a half years.

Slidell Louisiana Police Officer Claude Stevens arrested on Domestic Abuse Charge

Sgt. Claude Stevens, a 14-year Slidell Louisiana Police Department veteran, was arrested Wednesday for domestic abuse after an altercation with his wife, according to a police spokesman.

 Sgt. Stevens was charged with simple battery domestic abuse and placed on administrative leave.

Seattle Police Officer Scott Moss arrested on Suspicion of DUI…Again

Sgt. Scott Moss, a Seattle police sergeant, was arrested April 3, 2011 on suspicion of drinking and driving, his second such arrest in six years.

Sgt. Moss was driving north on Interstate 405 near Newcastle when he was pulled over at 5:05 a.m., said Trooper Cliff Pratt, a spokesman for the State Patrol.

Police say officer Mike Phillips was booked Tuesday after a collision in the area of Paradise Lane and Mountain Vista Boulevard.
