Sgt. Edward Howard Jr. was charged by Cook County prosecutors with aggravated battery and official misconduct for allegedly slapping Gregory Jeffries, 19, while his hands were cuffed behind his back.

Sgt. Howard claimed the boy tried to spit at him.

The teenager denies that.

Analysis: In 2007, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis set up a Public Integrity Unit with much fanfare. Four years later, it had seemingly gone quiet. I decided to take a look back at the unit’s work and found that it had prosecuted just three elected officials, only one of which resulted in punitive action — a $1,000 fine.

Louisiana Attorneys seek Retrial for suspected Serial Killer Derrick Todd Lee due to Prosecutorial Misconduct

An attorney for Derrick Todd Lee, convicted in the slaying of an LSU graduate student, says Lee should be retried.

Gary Clements with the Capital Post-Conviction Project of Louisiana said Tuesday that Lee’s 2004 murder conviction and death sentence should be overturned because his court-appointed trial lawyers were underfunded and ineffective.

New Jersey Prison Officer Luis Roman pleads Guilty to aiding Drug Smugglers

Former prison officer Luis Roman, 47, of Avenel, New Jersey pleaded guilty Monday in state Superior Court here to racketeering and official misconduct.

The state Attorney General’s Office will recommend Roman be sentenced to 14 years in state prison.

San Francisco California Public Defender Jeff Adachi participated in a community forum on April 20, 2011 on the recent police misconduct scandal involving residential hotels in the city.

The forum, hosted by San Francisco-based POOR Magazine, included people living in the city’s residential hotels, as well as Tal Klement, a deputy public defender who worked on one of the cases that was dropped because of surveillance video showing the alleged misconduct.

 In 2008, the FBI had more than 2,500 open public corruption cases, an increase of more than 50 percent since 2003. 

During 2007 and 2008 alone, more than 18,000 government officials in the U.S. were convicted.  That means over 9,000 government officials are convicted every year — likely over 100,000 this decade.
